FLEAS: The Culprits Behind the Itch

For dogs and cats, spring doesn’t spell FUN- it spells FLEAS!  With their razor sharp jaws designed to pierce your pet’s skin, these tiny parasites will make life a misery for our four legged friends.

Fleas transmit tape worms and leave young or small animals weak from loss of blood. Their bites will leave your pet helplessly scratching day after day.  Flea bites can lead to skin lesions, hair loss, dermatitis, and even severe allergies.

Fleas go through four different life stages: eggs, pupae, larvae and adults.  The adult phase is the only stage seen on pets, while other stages are usually found in carpets, bedding, and also in thick grass or under trees in your yard.

Adult fleas are only the visible tip of the iceberg, making up just five percent of the flea population.  That is why flea control means not just killing the adults but controlling the juvenile stages as well.  A combination of environmental treatments, such as flea bombs, powders and sprays, pet specific topical liquids, tablets, shampoos will be the most effective.

What can you do about FLEAS?

Unfortunately, 95% of fleas are found in the home and garden.  A complete flea treatment means they need to be dealt with there as well as on your pets.

Consider These Three simple steps when dealing with fleas:

Step1: Your House

Some 83% of fleas will develop in carpets in the home.  Vacuuming will remove around 60% of flea eggs and 27% of larvae.

Step 2: Your Yard

In the yard, mow the grass, get rid of dirt and sand piles, and trim shrubs near where pets sleep to maximize the sunlight in those areas.  This will kill immature fleas by frying them out.

Step3:  Your Pet

Use flea control products such as frontline plus.  This treatment is active for a month after each application and will breakdown the flea life cycle.

For immediate relief come to Bubbles Pet Spa for a flea treatment. We have two types of flea treatments at Bubbles Pet Spa, one is a flea shampoo treatment using a natural orange peel based shampoo to kill the fleas and the other uses the same shampoo followed by a soothing oatmeal conditioner.
