How your pet spends the average day is probably the biggest consideration for planning a grooming schedule. Most pets can benefit from once-a-month grooming, but this varies. For example, depending on its coats, an older pet that spends most of the day indoors will be fine with a bath and nail trim every 4-6 weeks, and a complete grooming 3 or 4 times a year.
This can be an important part of keeping older pets healthy. You may notice as your pet ages that skin becomes more sensitive and the coat drier. Our experienced groomers are often the first to notice physical changes in their clients that can indicate a health problem. We can often recommend skin treatments, for example, that will nip problems in the bud and keep more serious issues from developing.
At the other end of the spectrum, young, active, outdoor pets or those with long hair can benefit from more frequent visits to the groomer. It can seem like the more fun your dog has, the dirtier he is. It’s also true that dogs and cats feel great when they’re all clean and trim, and they love the extra snuggles and petting that a good-smelling pet receives. It can be difficult to get very thick coats really clean at home; our equipment deep-cleans the coat of your dog or cat, and a thorough brush-out distributes oils for healthier skin. This kind of clean lasts longer.
Breed
As we mentioned, the length of your pet’s hair can determine the best grooming frequency. Longer coats are beautiful, but they require more maintenance to stay that way. Cat breeds like Persians, Himalayans, or Maine Coons have luxurious coats, and should be brushed daily. Proper bathing helps keep the coat lustrous and prevents drying out.
Since cats clean themselves fastidiously, some owners think that there’s no need for bathing. But if you think about it, the fact that your cat is licking its coat daily makes it all the more essential that it be clean. Cats with shorter hair may not need a full groom more than 2 or 3 times a year, but will still benefit from regular baths, as well as nail clipping.
The variety of dog breeds is even greater, and there can be a wide range of grooming frequencies, depending on your pet’s pedigree. Obviously, long-haired breeds like, Collies, Yorkies, Afghans, and Shih tzus all require a good bit of attention. Their coats catch and hold dirt more efficiently than the slick-haired breeds, so bathing at least 4-6 weeks is a must. Keeping their coats neat, attractive, and free of tangles and knots calls for a light daily brushing as well as regular clipping and trims.

For some breeds, especially Poodles and smaller breeds such as Yorkies or Pekingese, more frequent grooming is recommended in order to maintain a haircut. These breeds –and a lot of other dogs- look their best when the coat is clipped and kept well trimmed. Ideally, these breeds should have a monthly trim.
For short-haired dogs, a full groom may only be necessary once or twice a year. Otherwise, regular nail clipping and baths as needed are usually enough for dogs like Labradors, Greyhounds, Weimaraners, Dalmatians, and many others. Again, keep your dog’s lifestyle –and your own- in mind. It may be that finding time for regular bathing is difficult. In that case, you might prefer to drop your pet off for a bath and brush.
